The star and the candles are stithed with back stitches that use the holes on the sides and middle of a cross stitch square as well. My cross stitch design program didn't let me draw them that way, that is why I had to enlarge the star and the candles and show them on the side. The star goes at the top of the tree, the square shows where (and should be left out when stitching). Each candle is represented by a white virtical back stitch in the tree, but you are supposed to add the wick and flame as shown to the right.
When stitching the tinsel garlands, you get to use that silver DMC that you got just because there was such a thing (I know I did). If you get it right, each candle should be two regular cross stitches high.
